Over the last few years we’re seen the average cost per click increase significantly for Google Ads. This is not to say Google Ads no longer effective; but rather more businesses are taken advantage of this once untapped market.
Every now and then however, we come across industries that have relatively low competition running Google Ads. This low competition means the average cost per click is significantly lower compared to a highly competitive industry where numerous business are competing for the same keywords.
What creates a Google Ads Opportunity?
Before we jump into the industries that can benefit significantly from Google Ads, let’s discuss the metrics for the analysis. Google Ads opportunities are evaluated on three very important factors which include:
Decent Average monthly Search Volumes
This is the average number of searches every month for your target keyword. If search volumes are low, then it isn’t possible to generate the traffic you desire to your website. On the other hand, if search volumes are high, then there is good chance you can attract ready to buy customers to your website.
High Quality, Specific Keywords
Another key factor is what people are searching. A quality keyword is one the is specific to the product or service your business sells. Furthermore, it might specify the suburb you operate in, such as ‘Doctors in Newcastle’. Quality keywords also imply the user is ready to make a purchase or an enquire for example ‘car service in Newcastle’.
Low Average Cost Per Click Relative to The Product or Service Sold
The average cost per click plays a significant role in the viability of your Google Ads campaign. A high cost per click doesn’t necessarily mean the advertiser isn’t getting great value. The amount you pay per click should be compare to the average price of the product or service you sell.
For example, $10 per click might sound a lot, but if your average sale is $5,000 – $10,000 with a profit margin of 80% then there’s a great return on investment. If you need 30 clicks to make a sale, then it’s $300 of ad spend to generate a $5,000 – $10,000 sale, of which you keep between $4,000 – $8,000 in profit.
Industries with the Biggest Opportunities Right Now
Since we’re based in Newcastle Australia, we are focusing on local industries in the Newcastle area. We evaluated the industries based on the three metrics outlined above. Below you can see a screenshot of the monthly search volumes in Google Keyword planner along with the cost per click range.
Architects firms based in Newcastle have one of the biggest opportunities to generate new business using Google Ads. According to Google Keyword Planner ‘Architects Newcastle’ is search on average 480 times per month in Google (in Australia). The average cost per click ranges from $3.02 – $5.88. I comparison to how much Architects change; this would provide a great return on investment.
The opportunity for Auto Electricians comes from the incredibly high search volumes. According to Google Keyword Planner ‘Auto Electrician Newcastle’ is searched on average 1,300 times a month in Google (in Australia). The cost per click ranges between $1.60 – $5.22. This means if a campaign is implemented effectively the advertiser could be paying $1.60 per a click; this be considered very cost effective for the business.
Builders based in Newcastle could take advantage of Google Ads due to the extremely high search volumes and relatively low cost per click in relation to the price of the service. On average, ‘Builders Newcastle’ is searched 720 times a month in Google (in Australia). The average cost per click ranges from $3.07 – $8.76. Although, the cost per click is a little high on the upper range, a campaign that has been optimised with a high-quality score could expect to be on the lower end of the range.
In addition, ‘Construction Newcastle’ is searched on average 30 times a month in Google with the average cost per click of $0.53 – $3.29.
Considering Builders average clients are between $20,000 all the way up to a $1m+. Then it is expected that the return on investment would be very high for Builders.
This one really surprised us. We expected Cafes to be extremely competitive for Google Ads, however the average cost per click was so low that it didn’t even register a price range. In addition to this, the average monthly search volumes are 2,400 a month for the search term ‘Café Newcastle’.
Typically, Cafes average customers range between $5 and $100. If a Café owner was to pay $0.20 per click, it could still turn a great return. This is because café generally foster repeat business, (just think how much you have spent at your favourite café) getting a customer through the door once can easily turn into daily visits.
Although cafes might make an initial loss to get someone through the door, if you consider the lifetime value of a customer, Google Ads would provide very return on investment.
Although Car Sales and Gumtree are popular choices for finding vehicles for sale online, there is still a high number of people who turn to Google to find cars for sale locally. On average, ‘Cars for sale Newcastle’ is Googled approximately 1,000 times per month in Australia. The average cost per click ranges from $0.36 – $1.67. In addition, ‘Used Cars Newcastle’ is searched on average 1,600 times per month in Newcastle, with an average cost per click ranging between $0.53 – $1.79.
When you compare this to the amount you must pay to list a car on Car Sales, then it presents a great opportunity for dealerships to target this untapped marketing. Furthermore, people will generally only click on Google Ads if they’re interested what’s being advertised. So, if a buyer is interested in purchasing a luxury car like a BMW, Audi are Mercedes Benz and a Google Ad for a Holden dealership pops up, then the buyer probably wont click on the ad.
Since Concreters customers often range anywhere between $5,000 to $100k+. The average monthly search volumes for ‘Concreters Newcastle’ is 480 searches per month with an average cost per a click ranging between $1.68 – $5.05. Furthermore, ‘Concrete Driveway Newcastle’ is searched on average 40 times a month with a cost per click range of $1.50 – $2.97.
Engineering & Structural Engineers
There are two opportunities for Engineering businesses in the Newcastle region. Firstly, is for the search phrase ‘Engineering Newcastle’, this is searched on average 70 time per month. The average cost per click is so low the ranges haven’t been defined by Google. This is probably one of the biggest opportunities out of all the industries since engineering services are expensive and there is no competition in Google Ads.
The second opportunity is for Structural Engineers in Newcastle. The search phrase ‘Structural Engineer Newcastle’ is searched on average 140 times a month in Google. The average cost per click ranges from $2.25 – $7.55 for this search. Considering Structural Engineers generally work on large projects and have high profit margins, the cost per click (even at the high end) would provide and exception return on investment.
Gym and Fitness
Gyms and Fitness industries typically use social media such as Facebook and Instagram to promote their businesses. However, Google is somewhat of an untapped market for these industries. ‘Gym Newcastle’ is searched on average 1,900 times a month in Google in Australia. The average cost per click for this keyword ranges from $1.99 – $4.77.
Since most gyms have lock in contracts that range between $600 – $1,200 annually, Google Ads can be extremely profitable for these businesses. Furthermore, a portion of people that sign up will generally renew their membership and remain long-term customers.
This was another surprise. Hotels have the highest search volumes out of all the industries on the list. The search phrase ‘Hotels in Newcastle’ is searched a whopping 8,100 times a month in Google. The cost per click for this keyword ranges from $1.43 – $4.82. This might seem like a lot compared with the price of the service. However, if the advertiser is running an ad with a high-quality score (and therefore on the low end of the cost per click range), then Google Ads are in fact a very profitable form of marketing for Hotels in Newcastle.
The right employee can have a great impact on a business, hence why Recruitment Agency’s charge significant fees to find the right employee. They operate in a double ended marketing which means they are looking for both job seekers and employers.
There are two main searches for Recruitment Agency’s; these are ‘Job Agencies Newcastle’ and ‘Recruitment Agencies Newcastle’. On average, ‘Job Agencies Newcastle’ is searched 110 times per month in Google with an average cost per click range of $1.12 – $4.09. And ‘Recruitment Agency Newcastle’ is searched on average 590 times per month with an average cost per click ranging between $1.24 – $3.74.
Considering recruitment agencies have a high profit margin and a high cost service, this means Google Ads are a viable option for Recruitment Agencies.
‘Mobile Mechanic Newcastle’ is searched on average 320 times a month in Google, with an average cost per click between $2.89 – $4.00. It would seem Mobile Mechanics shouldn’t be on this list due to the high cost per click relative to the cost of the service. However, what we took into consideration was the quality of the keyword and the users need to purchase.
Someone searching for a mobile mechanic is probably having car troubles and wants to contact a mechanic as soon as possible. This means the keyword would likely have very high conversion rates; meaning a high percentage of people that click on the ad, contact the business. It is for this reason we believe there is a good opportunity for mobile mechanics to take advantage of Google Ads.
New Home Builders & Project Home Builders
This is another big one. ‘Home Builders Newcastle’ is searched on average 320 times per month in Google with an average cost per click range of $2.52 – $6.32. In addition, ‘New homes Newcastle’ is searched on average 20 times a month with an average cost per click of $1.51 – $3.49.
Considering the average client of these companies typically ranges between $200,000 and $500,000 the profit margin on a Google Ads campaign would be exceptionally high.
We mostly witness Doctors advertisings on the radio or in Newspapers but considering there is on average 590 searches a month for ‘Newcastle Doctors’, it would suggest a large number of people jump on Google to find a doctor.
The opportunity for doctors is created by several factors. Firstly, ‘Doctors Newcastle’ has a low cost per click range of $1.21 – 2.00 which makes Google Ads extremely cost effective. In addition, someone that is searching for a doctor is probably sick, and needs to book an appointment that day, meaning there would be a very high conversion rate. Finally, Doctors typically generate repeat business, so there is also the likelihood that these customers would create repeat business.
Real Estate Agencies
There is record numbers of people searching online for properties to buy and for a Real Estate Agent to sell their home. With approximately 5,400 searches a month for the search term ‘Real Estate Newcastle’ with an average cost per click of $0.25 – $2.64. And 720 searches a month for the keyword ‘Real Estate Agents Newcastle’ with an average cost per click of $5.19 – $19.96 (whoever is paying $19.96 a click has no idea how to run Google Ads), there is an opportunity for Real Estate Agents to target both buyers and seller using Google Ads.
Since Real Estate Agents have extremely high profit margins; one listing in the Newcastle region can be worth between $12,500 – $30,000 in commission when sold. This make Google Ads a very viable option for Real Estate Agents.
